Representing disease courses: An application of the Neurological Disease Ontology to Multiple Sclerosis Typology
The Neurological Disease Ontology (ND) is being developed to provide a comprehensive framework for the representation of neurological diseases (Diehl et al., 2013). ND utilizes the model established by the Ontology for General Medical Science (OGMS) for the representation of entities in medicine and disease (Scheuermann et al., 2009). The goal of ND is to include information for each
disease concerning its molecular, genetic, and environmental origins, the processes involved in its etiology and realization, as well as its clinical presentation including
signs and symptoms
Ontologies for the study of neurological disease
We have begun work on two separate but related ontologies for the study of neurological diseases. The first, the Neurological Disease Ontology (ND), is intended to provide a set of controlled, logically connected classes to describe the range of neurological diseases and their associated signs and symptoms, assessments, diagnoses, and interventions that are encountered in the course of clinical practice. ND is built as an extension of the Ontology for General Medical Sciences — a high-level candidate OBO Foundry ontology that provides a set of general classes that can be used to describe general aspects of medical science. ND is being built with classes utilizing both textual and axiomatized definitions that describe and formalize the relations between instances of other classes within the ontology itself as well as to external ontologies such as the Gene Ontology, Cell Ontology, Protein Ontology, and Chemical Entities of Biological Interest. In addition, references to similar or associated terms in external ontologies, vocabularies and terminologies are included when possible. Initial work on ND is focused on the areas of Alzheimer’s and other diseases associated with dementia, multiple sclerosis, and stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Extensions to additional groups of neurological diseases are planned. The second ontology, the Neuro-Psychological Testing Ontology (NPT), is intended to provide a set of classes for the annotation of neuropsychological testing data. The intention of this ontology is to allow for the integration of results from a variety of neuropsychological tests that assay similar measures of cognitive functioning. Neuro-psychological testing is an important component in developing the clinical picture used in the diagnosis of patients with a range of neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and following stroke or traumatic brain injury. NPT is being developed as an extension to the Ontology for Biomedical Investigations
The Space Object Ontology
Achieving space domain awareness requires the
identification, characterization, and tracking of space objects.
Storing and leveraging associated space object data for purposes
such as hostile threat assessment, object identification, and
collision prediction and avoidance present further challenges.
Space objects are characterized according to a variety of
parameters including their identifiers, design specifications,
components, subsystems, capabilities, vulnerabilities, origins,
missions, orbital elements, patterns of life, processes, operational
statuses, and associated persons, organizations, or nations. The
Space Object Ontology provides a consensus-based realist
framework for formulating such characterizations in a
computable fashion. Space object data are aligned with classes
and relations in the Space Object Ontology and stored in a
dynamically updated Resource Description Framework triple
store, which can be queried to support space domain awareness
and the needs of spacecraft operators. This paper presents the
core of the Space Object Ontology, discusses its advantages over
other approaches to space object classification, and demonstrates
its ability to combine diverse sets of data from multiple sources
within an expandable framework. Finally, we show how the
ontology provides benefits for enhancing and maintaining longterm
space domain awareness
Pressure-Induced Insulating State in Ba1-xRExIrO3 (RE = Gd, Eu) Single Crystals
BaIrO3 is a novel insulator with coexistent weak ferromagnetism, charge and
spin density wave. Dilute RE doping for Ba induces a metallic state, whereas
application of modest pressure readily restores an insulating state
characterized by a three-order-of-magnitude increase of resistivity. Since
pressure generally increases orbital overlap and broadens energy bands, a
pressure-induced insulating state is not commonplace. The profoundly dissimilar
responses of the ground state to light doping and low hydrostatic pressures
signal an unusual, delicate interplay between structural and electronic degrees
of freedom in BaIrO3
Robust pricing and hedging of double no-touch options
Double no-touch options, contracts which pay out a fixed amount provided an
underlying asset remains within a given interval, are commonly traded,
particularly in FX markets. In this work, we establish model-free bounds on the
price of these options based on the prices of more liquidly traded options
(call and digital call options). Key steps are the construction of super- and
sub-hedging strategies to establish the bounds, and the use of Skorokhod
embedding techniques to show the bounds are the best possible.
In addition to establishing rigorous bounds, we consider carefully what is
meant by arbitrage in settings where there is no {\it a priori} known
probability measure. We discuss two natural extensions of the notion of
arbitrage, weak arbitrage and weak free lunch with vanishing risk, which are
needed to establish equivalence between the lack of arbitrage and the existence
of a market model.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figure
THYMUS-DERIVED LYMPHOCYTES PRODUCE AN IMMUNOLOGICALLY SPECIFIC MACROPHAGEARMING FACTOR
Spleen cells from mice immunized with an allogeneic tumor when cultured with the specific tumor cells release into the supernatant a specific macrophage-arming factor(s) (SMAF) which binds nonspecifically to macrophages from both mice and rats and renders these cytotoxic to the specific tumor cells. SMAF also binds in an immunologically specific way to the target cells. SMAF-treated target cells grow normally in the absence of macrophages but are killed in the presence of normal macrophages. Thymus-derived cells are necessary for the production of SMAF since (a) after treatment with anti-θ serum immune spleen cells fail to release SMAF; (b) spleen cells from immunized T cell-deprived mice (thymectomized as adults followed by whole body irradiation and restored with bone marrow) fail to produce SMAF on stimulation with the specific target cells. While SMAF has the properties of a cytophilic antibody, it does not belong to one of the established classes of immunoglobulin since high activity is found after column separation in a fraction having a molecular weight between 50,000–60,000 daltons
Intermediate Wakimoto modules for Affine sl(n+1)
We construct certain boson type realizations of affine sl(n+1) that depend on
a parameter r. When r=0 we get a Fock space realization of Imaginary Verma
modules appearing in the work of the first author and when r=n they are the
Wakimoto modules described in the work of Feigin and Frenkel
Anderson-Yuval approach to the multichannel Kondo problem
We analyze the structure of the perturbation expansion of the general
multichannel Kondo model with channel anisotropic exchange couplings and in the
presence of an external magnetic field, generalizing to this case the
Anderson-Yuval technique. For two channels, we are able to map the Kondo model
onto a generalized resonant level model. Limiting cases in which the equivalent
resonant level model is solvable are identified. The solution correctly
captures the properties of the two channel Kondo model, and also allows an
analytic description of the cross-over from the non Fermi liquid to the Fermi
liquid behavior caused by the channel anisotropy.Comment: 23 pages, ReVTeX, 4 figures av. on reques
Better Performance Through Thread-local Emulation
ABSTRACT Mobile platforms are shifting away from managed code and toward native code. For example, the most recent versions of Android compile Dalvik bytecodes to native code at installtime, and apps frequently use third-party native libraries. The trend toward native code on mobile platforms calls us to develop new ways of building dynamic taint-tracking tools, such as TaintDroid, that achieve good performance. In this paper, we argue that the key to good performance is to track only when necessary, e.g., when an app handles sensitive data. We argue that thread-local emulation is a feature that captures this goal. In this paper, we discuss the motivation for thread-local emulation, the software and hardware techniques that may be used to implement it, results from preliminary work, and the many challenges that remain
Semisimplicity of the quantum cohomology for smooth Fano toric varieties associated with facet symmetric polytopes
The degree zero part of the quantum cohomology algebra of a smooth Fano toric
symplectic manifold is determined by the superpotential function, W, of its
moment polytope. In particular, this algebra is semisimple, i.e. splits as a
product of fields, if and only if all the critical points of W are
non-degenerate. In this paper we prove that this non-degeneracy holds for all
smooth Fano toric varieties with facet-symmetric duals to moment polytopes.Comment: 16 pages; corrected version, published in Electron. Res. Announc.
